Sen Nguyen
Sen is an award-winning journalist, podcast and documentary producer from Vietnam with experience in cross-border reporting, investigative and multimedia journalism.
She writes long-form features, analysis and explainers as a contributor to globally reputable outlets including Al Jazeera, CNN, South China Morning Post and Thomson Reuters. She also shoots videos and produces podcasts and documentaries. Sen has reported from Vietnam, Cambodia, the UK, and Australia.
In 2023, she became a winner in the UN's International Labour Organisation's Global Media Competition on Labour Migration for her story on Al Jazeera about the migration culture and politics of Nghe An province, one of Vietnam's biggest emigration hubs.
Some of her other favorite reporting include an investigation into social media platforms censoring sex ed content, the Chinese-run global scam operations in Cambodia, policy failures and manmade actions that have led to considerable out-migration in Vietnam's Mekong Delta, labor trafficking of Vietnamese workers at a construction site for one of China's major tyre conglomerates in Serbia, and harm reduction efforts for drug users in Australia and Southeast Asia.
She has also provided media and research consultancies for WWF, Queen Mary University, ECPAT International, Bread for the World, and other NGOs.
Her research capacity benefits from the fact that she hold a master's in migration and diaspora studies from SOAS University of London as a Chevening scholar.
While Sen covers many bases, she can get super geeky about migration, gender and climate change issues (the last two are the key tenets of the podcast Descendants of Hai Bà Trưng she's hosting and producing for United Nations Development Programme in Vietnam).
In 2020, she was one of the top 5 country finalists to receive a Merit Award for the Journalism for an Equitable Asia Award organised by Oxfam for her story on South China Morning Post about the Covid-19 impact on migrant workers.
